AMA would 'like to see' a sugar tax to combat obesity - Sky News Australia

AMA Vice President Dr Chris Moy says Australia is one of the most obese countries in the world, and the association would “like to see” a sugar tax imposed. His comments come after the AMA outlined a blueprint for fixing Australia’s fractured health system. Discussing prevention areas which Australia should be investing in at the moment, Dr Moy said obesity is “number one”. “Australia is one of the most obese countries in the world, now let’s talk about the flow on effects of that,” he said. “As we get more obese, then we have greater pressure on general practice trying to manage the critical sort of problems with that like heart disease, strokes, heart attacks, amputations, eye disease, kidney disease. “That flows on to hospital admissions, to surgery, renal transplants, things like that.” Dr Moy said Australia does need something such as a sugar tax on sugary drinks. “That’s a low hanging fruit, it’s a signal to everybody that sugar is an issue,” he said. “The AMA would, for example, like to see a sugar tax which is then put into, for example, greater access to clean water in Indigenous areas.”
