More coronavirus deaths and hospitalisations on the way: Victoria's Chief Health Officer

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says he hopes numbers will stabilise in coming days, but he expects more Victorians will be hospitalised.

"There will be dozens of individuals who will require hospitalisation from these 428 people. Tragically, there will be several who require intensive care support and a number of people will die, and whenever we have a day of these numbers that is the case," Professor Sutton said.

He said the numbers reflect behaviour and mobility from 10 or more days ago.

"So, of course, there is a hope that the numbers stabilise over the coming days, towards the end of this week. That is my hope," he said.

Professor Sutton said additional measures may be required if the numbers do not decrease.

"We are not just banking on the idea that if we wait long enough those numbers will stabilise and drop, so we must bear in mind any additional measures that are important to help control the numbers."

There are currently 122 people hospitalised with coronavirus in Victoria, including 31 in intensive care. A total of 32 people statewide have died because of the virus.

Health authorities establishing further coronavirus testing sites in Victoria

Authorities are monitoring regional data on coronavirus cases on a daily basis, Victoria's Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has said.

"We will do that in a number of ways and the first will be stepping up additional testing capacity to have 160 different testing sites across Victoria, 60... in regional communities," she said.

"We will establish further testing sites across Victoria, including in regional communities in coming days and weeks," she said.

She said there had been some cases of people from regional Victoria who may have been commuting to Melbourne.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews urges people in Melbourne lockdown zone to stay at home

Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews has clarified the rules for travel in the lockdown zone in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell shire after a couple travelled from Coburg, in Melbourne's north, to Rye on the Mornington Peninsula, in Melbourne's south.

"That is a 200-kilometre round trip," Mr Andrews said. "That is not daily exercise, that is a day trip and day trips are not on."

He urged people to stay close to home.

"Please use good judgement, please, follow the rules," he said.

"That is how we will get to the other side of this."

Victoria records daily record of 428 new coronavirus cases and three further deaths from COVID-19

Victoria has recorded 428 new cases of coronavirus today, along with three further deaths from COVID-19.

It is the biggest daily increase in infections since the pandemic began and the 12th day in a row of triple-digit increases in daily infections.

The previous highest daily tally in Victoria was yesterday with 317 new cases.

The 428 new cases for Victoria are just shy of the nationwide daily record for new cases of 457 on March 28.

Of those 428, 57 are connected to known outbreaks, one is a returned traveller in hotel quarantine and 370 are under investigation.

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed three people had died of coronavirus since yesterday - a man in his 80s, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 80s.

"I can offer no further information about those three tragedies, but we send our best wishes and our thoughts," he said.

A total of122 Victorians are in hospital, including 31 receiving intensive care.

A total of 24,409 tests for coronavirus were carried out yesterday, Mr Andrews said.

Health officials concerned about COVID-19 at western Sydney mall

Dr Chant has asked anyone who has spent time in Wetherill Park’s Stockland Mall in the last two weeks to be “particularly vigilant for symptoms”.

“There are five recent cases that report spending some time in the Stockland mall at Wetherill Park while infectious,” she said.

Dr Chant said she was also concerned a “transmission event” occurred at the Thai Rock restaurant in the mall.

A woman in her 30s who worked at the restaurant on July 9, 10, 11 and 14 has been diagnosed with COVID-19, and Dr Chant said people who had been at that restaurant on the 10th, 11th and 14th should “watch carefully” for symptoms.

“If they occur, isolate and immediately come forward for testing,” she said.

Dr Chant added it was important not to penalise businesses called out by NSW Health as potential places of transmission, saying once they undergo deep cleans they were probably the safest places to visit.

While a lot of focus is on south-western Sydney, Dr Chant said it was important people around the state do not become complacent about the risk of coronavirus.

"It is imperative that anyone across the state comes forward for testing if they have the symptoms, however mild,” she said.

People more likely to mingle at funerals than weddings, says NSW Premier

Speaking about new restrictions announced on Friday, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said different caps were placed on funerals (100 people) compared with weddings (150 people) because people were more likely to mingle at funerals.

“Weddings are seated for the duration of the event whereas at funerals, depending on religion and ceremonies, there are different aspects to the service. Funerals are much more complex in how people interact with each other whereas weddings, we have an expectation that everyone comes, sits down and stays seated,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Crossroads cluster grows to 42

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said up to 9am this morning 13 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed.

That includes eight cases confirmed in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. Several of those cases, including a woman who travelled from Melbourne to Ballina, were reported yesterday.

Between 8pm yesterday and 9am today, five more cases were reported including three linked to the Crossroads Hotel cluster.

The cluster has grown to 42 cases, including 27 people who are linked to the outbreak but did not attend the hotel themselves.

Some of those are cases of tertiary infection - contacts of people who were close contacts of Crossroads Hotel cases.

“This highlights the rapidity and spread this virus can move through the community,” Dr Chant said.

One of the new cases, in a teenager, remains under investigation.

20 person limit on gatherings remains in NSW

In NSW, the rules on gatherings - 20 visitors to homes and 20 people for gatherings in public places - remain unchanged after a tightening of restrictions was announced on Friday.

However Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant strongly encouraged a precautionary approach of limiting visitors to the home to 10 people.

Weddings capped at 150 with no dancing or mingling in NSW

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced a further tightening of restrictions on restaurants, cafes and bars, which will limit group bookings to 10 people. They will apply from 12:01am on Friday July 24.

The new restrictions on cafes and restaurants amount to an extension of the 10-person group bookings limit already imposed on pubs, which is effective from today.

“We absolutely need everybody seated when they are in a venue. No mingling,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Weddings and corporate events will be limited to 150 people, and “high risk activities” such as choirs and dancing must not occur.

Funerals and places of worship will be limited to 100 people.

The one person per four square metre rule still applies.

“These measures we are bringing are to protect NSW. These measures will reduce the risk of community transmission getting out of control,” Ms Berejiklian said.
