The entire school community of Al-Taqwa College in Melbourne's Truganina has been placed into quarantine on Friday and will be tested for coronavirus.

The private school has been linked to 23 cases this week with confirmed student-to-student transmission. Victoria’s Deputy Chief Health Officer Anneliese Van Diemen said the school had been “entirely placed in quarantine” while deep cleaning and contact tracing are underway.

“We have further cases that have been linked to Al-Taqwa College — and that college is now being entirely placed in quarantine for all staff and students."

“We are working very closely with the college and the Department of Education on that front," she said.

Melbourne saw 66 new virus cases on Friday, taking the state total to 2368.

Australian citizens have made a list of those who will be able to travel to the England without having to undertake a 14-day quarantine from 10 July.

The British government published a full list of countries overnight whose citizens will be able to freely enter England without the need to isolate. The exemption does not apply to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, where devolved administrations will set their own rules in the near future.

The list includes those from Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Italy, 14 British Overseas Territories and a number of European and Asian nations.

But China, the US, Sweden and Portugal are not on the list, meaning arrivals from there will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

The controversial UK quarantine system was introduced four weeks ago to much criticism from the airline industry and others who pointed out that travellers would have to take public transport in order to get to their 'isolating' destination.

The US' top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, has warned a more infectious strain of coronavirus may be emerging in the country.

The director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases told the Journal of the American Medical Association that research suggested the strain of the virus found in Italy was different to the one observed in Wuhan, China.

He said the main difference was the contagion abilities of the disease,m with the Italian version passing from person to person more effectively and making it more difficult to contain.

“It just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible,” he said.

The study he referenced showed the Italian virus version had become the dominant strain of the global pandemic. The good news is, researchers found there is no evidence symptoms are worse in this strain than the original.

The US has 2.7 million confirmed virus cases so far, around 25 per cent of the global total.

The Melbourne suburbs of Kensington and Flemington in the 3031 postcode are at risk of going into lockdown as early as next week after being labelled infection hotspots.

The inner northern Melbourne suburbs border Travancore and Ascot Vale which are already in lockdown and the area has seen some of the highest increases in the city in the last week.

Premier Daniel Andrews has warned the lockdown could be extended to cover the entire state if numbers do not improve.

Flemington's racing grounds are usually home to the Melbourne Cup but a large testing site has been set up in the Melbourne Showgrounds next door.

The suburbs currently under stay-at-home orders include:

  • 3012: Brooklyn, Kingsville, Maidstone, Tottenham, West Footscray
  • 3021: Albanvale, Kealba, Kings Park, St Albans
  • 3032: Ascot Vale, Highpoint City, Maribyrnong, Travancore
