Moderna jab approved for Aussie kids - NEWS.com.au

Australian children aged 12 to 15 will be able to receive the Moderna vaccine but the UK is not backing plans to give jabs to kids.

Australian children aged 12 to 15 will be able to receive the Moderna vaccine but the United Kingdom is not backing plans to give Covid-19 jabs to kids.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration on Saturday provisionally approved the use of the Moderna vaccine, known as Spikevax, it said in a statement.

“This decision follows the provisional approval granted by the TGA to Spikevax on 9 August 2021 for use in individuals aged 18 years and older,” the statement read.

“The recommended dose and dose interval is the same as that for the adult population — two full doses given 28 days apart.”

The TGA said approval for the age group was made “following careful evaluation of the available data supporting safety and efficacy”.

Australia has more than 25 million available doses of the Moderna vaccine.

The announcement follows news that the Pfizer jab was approved for children in the same age group.

Speaking to reporters last week, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Australian Government would make both vaccines available once they were approved.

“ATAGI has considered and recommended that Pfizer be made available to all children from 12-15 years,” he said.

“As a consequence of that, we will open up bookings for vaccinations from September 13 for all children aged 12-15.

“Importantly, what that means is we’re in a position to ensure that all children, and all families that seek their children to be vaccinated between 12-15, will be able to do so this year.

“We’re in a position to move from September 13 and that’s a carefully sequenced plan.”

He said that once ATAGI approved Moderna, “we will also make that available”.

It comes as the UK’s authority on vaccinations stepped back from approving covid vaccines for healthy children.

According to the BBC, the UK’s vaccine advisory body said children “were at such a low risk from the virus that jabs would offer only a marginal benefit”.

The last word on the matter will be left to the UK’s four chief medical officers but Health Secretary Sajid Javid said a final decision was imminent.

Reuters reports that Britain’s vaccine advisers are “preferring a precautionary approach in healthy children due to a rare side effect of heart inflammation”.

Heart inflammation, also known as myocarditis, is a very rare side effect noted by ATAGI.

In a statement on August 2, ATAGI wrote that “myocarditis and/or pericarditis have recently been reported overseas in adolescents aged 12 and older and in adults, following mRNA COVID-19 vaccines including (Pfizer).

“The risk of these conditions appears higher in adolescents compared to adults,” ATAGI wrote.

“In an analysis of US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System data, crude reporting rates were 40.6 cases per million second doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in males aged 12−29 years, and 2.4 per million second doses in males aged (over) 30 years.

“Reporting rates among females in these age groups were 4.2 and 1.0 per million second doses, respectively.

“More detailed data on incidence, including more refined age-specific incidence rates for adolescents aged 12-15 compared to over 16 years, and on medical risk factors, are not yet available.”
