Fresh COVID-19 cases in northern NSW as Byron is freed - Sky News Australia

A new coronavirus infection has been recorded in Byron Bay, just hours after it was announced the idyllic beach town would be freed from lockdown.

Northern New South Wales has recorded two local COVID-19 cases on the same day Health Minister Brad Hazzard announced Byron Bay would be freed from lockdown, casting doubt over the border bubble with Queensland.

Northern NSW Local Health District on Tuesday evening announced one fresh infection in the Byron Bay area and a second in the Kyogle region.

“Initial investigations indicate that both people had been infectious in the community, with contact tracing and investigations currently under way,” a statement read.

The local infections came after Mr Hazzard on Tuesday confirmed stay-at-home orders for the Tweed and Byron Shire LGAs would be lifted at midnight as scheduled.

Queensland authorities then moved to change the travel restrictions for residents living in the areas.

“From 1am AEST Wednesday 29 September 2021, the Tweed Shire and Byron Shire local government areas (LGAs) are part of the non-restricted border zone,” a statement read.

“This means that only the non-restricted border zone rules apply to residents of those LGAs and Queenslanders travelling to these areas.”

Byron, Tweed and Kempsey went into lockdown last week after a makeup artist from Sydney travelled to the area to work on reality TV show I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here.

The woman was infectious in the community before testing positive to COVID-19.

Residents in northern NSW are urged to come forward for testing at the first sign of any COVID-19 symptoms.

A new drive-through clinic will be open in Kyogle.

  • Kyogle Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology Drive Through clinic – Kyogle Visitor Information Centre, Cnr Summerland Way and Anzac Drive. Open from 9am to 3pm. Appointments are not required.

The drive-through clinic will also be open at Byron Bay.

  • QML Drive through testing clinic - Cavanbah Sports Ground, Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay, open from 10am to 4pm. Appointments are not required.
