Genomic sequencing reveals no link between the Berala and Avalon outbreaks - Sky News Australia

Genomic sequencing has revealed the Berala cluster is not linked to the Avalon outbreak as previously thought but to a patient transport driver, according to NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant. NSW has been dealing with two different strains of the virus during the recent outbreak which first emerged in December. Dr Chant said the patient transport worker acquired an infection while transporting a family group who had returned from overseas, and transmitted the disease to a colleague who appears to have been infectious while attending the Berala BWS. “That colleague had been at the Berala BWS for a very fleeting amount of time, but what we now know is that transmission occurred”. Ms Chant said the line of transmission particularly in relation to the BWS store had occurred despite “very minimal exposure” which was a concerning development
