Australians diagnosed with ADHD as adults will now be able to access a subsidised treatment for the first time.
Vyvanse is the first drug of its kind - a long-acting stimulant for those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - and from February 1 it will be available under the pharmaceutical benefits scheme for people diagnosed with the disorder as adults.
ADHD affects a person's ability to exert age-appropriate self-control. Common symptoms include an inability to regulate attention, thoughts, behaviour and emotions.
This can include the ability to reliably recall information, to plan, problem-solve and self-reflect.
Up until recently, ADHD has been considered largely a childhood disorder, meaning affordable treatment options have been hard to find for those diagnosed as adults.
"It's now very clear that at least two-thirds of those that have ADHD continue to have problems into adulthood," Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry David Coghill told AAP.
"(And) there's an awful lot of adults with ADHD whose diagnosis was missed during childhood and adolescence."
More than 530,000 Australian adults are living with the condition.
The PBS listing of Vyvanse could be a game-changer for them, Professor Coghill says, describing the treatment as "more difficult to abuse" and longer-lasting, and now affordable at almost a third of its former price.
"This news is significant," he said.
"ADHD leads to a really wide range of impairments and problems with people's quality of life - very high rates of divorce, family breakdown, unemployment, drug misuse, teenage pregnancy, offending, motor vehicle accidents, head injuries.
"Some of the figures are quite shocking: adults with ADHD have four times higher mortality rates than those without ADHD, so it's really not a trivial condition."
