Researchers have found that coronavirus can survive on surfaces such as banknotes, phone screens and stainless steel for as long as four weeks.

The shock discovery by experts at Australia’s national science agency suggests that COVID-19 remains infectious for far longer than first thought.

Scientists had previously believed the virus, which is most commonly transmitted when people cough, sneeze or talk, could only survive out of the body for two to three days.

The virus was studied in laboratories in 20C conditions, which is around room temperature.

The CSIRO says the research shows that COVID-19 is “extremely robust” and emphasises the importance of regularly washing our hands as well as mobile phone screens and other high-touch items.

“Establishing how long the virus really remains viable on surfaces enables us to more accurately predict and mitigate its spread, and do a better job of protecting our people,” CSIRO chief executive Dr Larry Marshall said.
