This award celebrates their pursuit of excellence and their significant impact on driving forward the frontiers of research and innovation.

Michael Houghton

Dr Michael Houghton
Research Fellow, Monash Nutrition, Dietetics and Food and Victorian Heart Institute

Nomination received for Michael:

"Dr. Michael Houghton is an early career researcher specializing in cell metabolism, biochemistry, and molecular nutrition. Since relocating from the UK to Monash, he has established an innovative research program which focus on the association between biologically active dietary components, metabolism, and chronic diseases. In particular, he has pioneered the use of high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAE-PAD) for the assessment of carbohydrate metabolism. This highly novel work resulted in a publication in Nature Protocols (Dec 2022), and is representative of the highly innovative research that Michael is undertaking at the Victorian Heart Institute.

Michael has significantly elevated the global recognition of his research, enhancing Monash's reputation as a cardiovascular research hub. To train other researches, he recently held a workshop on novel carbohydrate metabolism techniques, at the joint conference of the Nutrition Societies of Australia and New Zealand. This international workshop not only showcased his groundbreaking work but also contributed to global recognition of the research conducted at the Victorian Heart Institute. By actively engaging in such workshops and conferences, he ensures the dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge, fostering a highly skilled future workforce at local, national, and global levels."

Above and Beyond Award

Awarded to a Professional staff member, Academic or Student that exemplifies unparalleled commitment, innovative problem-solving, and work ethic that goes beyond the call of duty. This award recognises their outstanding professionalism, collaborative spirit, and transformative impact, highlighting the pivotal role they play.

Avishka Wickramarachchi

Mr Avishka Wickramarachchi
PhD Candidate, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Victorian Heart Institute

Nomination received for Avishka:
“Avishka goes above and beyond to keep the Level 2 PC2 labs running, although this always happens quietly in the background. He deserves recognition and celebration for his work organising deliveries, inspections, maintenance, consumables, training, correspondence, coffee pods, etc. He might think it is only small contributions (although I guarantee, it is not), but it allows the rest of us to research in a safe and organised work space. Alongside this work, he is able to maintain a stellar publication record, multi-institutional collaborations,  and just generally being a friend to everyone at the VHI. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the Above and Beyond Award.

It is the people working in the background that make a functional and harmonious workplace. By always volunteering to help, by quietly picking up jobs that otherwise don't get done, and by maintaining a steady and welcoming figure in PC2 lab orchestration, Avishka is allowing the great work at the VHI to continue.”

Future Leaders Award

Awarded to a PhD candidate or Early-Mid Career Researcher (EMCR) for their impactful contribution to the advancement of science, research and education. This award will consider their broader contributions, including impact in the community.

Rajshree Thapa

Dr Rajshree Thapa
Research Fellow, Eastern Health Clinical School and Victorian Heart Institute

Nomination recieved for Rajshree:
"Dr Rajshree Thapa is an early career researcher with a keen interest and experience in implementing cardiovascular disease research. She recently published a fabulous paper on Lancet Global Health on Hypertension Management by community health workers.

Currently, she is working with Eastern Health Clinical School to improve cardiometabolic health for women with gestational diabetes with a focus on equity. Currently, she is working with women who had a history of gestational diabetes, Diabetes Victoria, Health workers and community service organizations to improve care for women with gestational diabetes. She has also contributed to the GBD paper on the Global burden of diabetes.

Further, she was a writing member for Pragmatic Solutions to reduce the global burden of Disease which was published in 2023 in the Lancet Neurology.

She is one of the most hardworking women and has great potential to excel in her career if given the right opportunity. Given the significance of her work, dedication and drive for an equitable health system, the award will be quite encouraging for her.

As Dr Thapa is a Global Health researcher from LMIC. I think her work will reach a global audience, thus, translating the evidence to action both in Australia and LMICs aligning with global recognition and improved reputation.

Further, she has demonstrated her capacity to publish in high-impact journals such as Lancet Global Health thus, contributing to global recognition. The skills she acquires will likely be translated through skill-building and knowledge-sharing in LMICs thus having a ripple effect of the education and skills she acquires in Australia (Local, national and global education and training offerings which deliver a highly skilled future workforce)."
