'It is a good morning': NSW Health Minister hints at low daily COVID-19 numbers - 9News

New South Wales is expected to announce another day of low daily COVID-19 infections, with the state's Health Minister hinting at the possibility of zero locally acquired cases.

"I will announce that at 11am but let's just say it is a good morning, I am enjoying the morning," he said.

It would be the second day of zero new locally acquired cases in the state after no new cases of community transmission were identified yesterday.

Mr Hazzard said the state would like to see two weeks of consistently low case numbers before restrictions are eased.

"I will be there very shortly this morning and discussing what we might be able to do," he told Today.

"I think it is fair to say that let's just take it carefully. We want to make sure that NSW, indeed all of Australia, stays safe."

Mr Hazzard said he is pleased with the way the state has handled the recent outbreaks around Sydney.

Mr Hazzard urged NSW residents to continue to come forward for testing in order to have restrictions loosened.

"I would just encourage every citizen to realise they are at the front line of this war on the virus," he said.

"Go and get tested if you have any symptoms at all of cold or flu like illness."

Despite a decline in the number of local cases, the number of virus cases connected with the mutant strain from the UK has doubled in the last week.

There are now 13 cases of the UK strain in Sydney undergoing hotel quarantine, sparking debate over the international border control.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has proposed a plan to move all international arrivals to regional areas for quarantine to distance them from metro areas.

The NSW government has remained firm in rejecting the plan, saying the state's hotel quarantine system is effective and transporting large groups of travellers could pose an added risk.

"In NSW, because it is such a big system ... it would be a mighty challenge and counter productive to move them away from what is a very good, very established system," Mr Hazzard said.

"I think the system we have got, based on the advice we are still getting from public health, is the best system for us."
