In 2020, the community is being urged to start 'seeing the ability in disability'.

Part of that push is celebrating and supporting people with a disability in telling their own stories.

The ABC's disability affairs reporter Nas Campanella said she always aimed to elevate the voices of everyday Australians living with disability who were often not heard.

Nas is dedicated to promoting the interests of people with a disability, and advocates in that role as the chairperson of ABC Inclusive, ABC's internal staff network for people with disability.

"We've formed a partnership between the ABC and the Australian Government to take that a step further with writers, presenters and film makers from my community showcasing their work across all platforms and programs," she said.

"It's a chance for the general public to learn about new perspectives and have their perceptions of disability challenged.

"It's also about the disability community raising awareness of the issues important to them and having control over the ways their stories are told.

"I'm really proud to be working for an organisation that is recognising and celebrating the contributions of the 4.4 million Australians living with disability."

Each year, the unique contributions of people with a disability are celebrated as part of International Day of People with a Disability.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that many of these celebrations will be moved online.

#Disable Stereotypes

On Thursday, December 3, which is International Day of People with a Disability, everyone is being urged to get behind the day by sharing messages of inclusion and diversity, as well as your own experiences of 'seeing the ability in disability' through online and social media channels using the hashtag #DisableStereotypes.

Writer, speaker and appearance activist Carly Findlay OAM said International Day of People with a Disability is a day for disabled people to celebrate and come together.

It is also a day on which disabled people work very hard to educate about inclusion, representation and accessibility.

"Don't just remember disabled people, disability issues and inclusion on December 3, remember, make disability a priority all year round," Carly said.

"Buy our art, read our stories, listen to our music, create accessibility, call for better media representation, give us a seat at every table - every day."
