The federal government will fund a first-of-its-kind blood cancer drug giving multiple myeloma patients hope in treating the disease. Health Minister Greg Hunt announced the federal government will list Darzalex to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from January 1. The drug is on the second-line of treatment for patients with multiple myeloma and will work by mobilising the patient's own immune system to attack the cancer. Multiple myeloma is one of the most common blood cancers, but the disease remains incurable. Director of Molecular Oncology at the Peter McCullum Cancer Centre Professor Miles Prince told Sky News the listing is a "big announcement" and will provide hope to patients. He said the drug's biggest success story is the way in which "it actually makes people live longer". The drug is expected to help the more than 1000 yearly patients of the disease, and the funding will mean the cost of the script will be greatly reduced to only $41.30.
