There's renewed hope for people with type 1 diabetes, with a drugs trial in Melbourne testing a new type of treatment.
Professor Tom Kay, from St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research called the work a "step forward towards a cure".
The treatment is intended to stop the immune system from destroying the insulin-producing cells of people with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes.
"Diabetes has been treated with insulin injections for a hundred years nearly," Prof. Kay told Today.
"What we are talking about trying to stop the disease before it gets to the stage where all the body's insulin production is lost and is destroyed.
"Rheumatoid arthritis is a cousin of type 1 diabetes, they are both diseases in which the immune system does damage to the body.
"These drugs have turned out to be very well tolerated and very effective at stopping the immune system damaging the body."
The drug is called baricitinib.
Professor Helen Thomas said the trial will see if the drug will protect the insulin-producing cells from immune attack.
"This would allow people who have recently been diagnosed with the disease to continue to produce insulin for a longer period and improve their glucose control," Prof. Thomas, said.
Scientists are looking for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes within the past 100 days, who are aged 12-30 to be involved with the study.
