GREEN BAY (WLUK) --New guidelines suggest taking aspirin daily is no longer needed to prevent heart attacks in healthy older adults. The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association released the new guidelines on Sunday.
"So we have the ACC and the AHA coming out jointly saying that wasn't the best recommendation. Now we are looking that a baby aspirin if you are not in a high risk group of patients then it's not needed," explained Dr. Simone Fearon the Cardiovascular Medical Director at ThedaCare.
The old recommendations suggested adults older than 50 take between 75 and 150 milligrams of aspirin a day, but Dr. Fearon said new studies show taking aspirin daily could actually be doing more harm than good.
"We see aspirin use in the elderly population or patients over 70 , so I think the primary risk is internal bleeding which we know is serious," she said.
For those who have never experienced a heart attack, clogged artery or stroke, doctors now say the best way to lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke is to live a healthy lifestyle.
"So you're eating a heart healthy diet, your weight, avoid cigarette smoking. all of that is going to lower your risk," said Dr. Fearon.
But if you are experiencing chest discomfort, arm pain, shortness of breath, fatigue or irregular heartbeat those could signs of a problem.
"Particularly in women, we have atypical symptoms like nausea, upset stomach, this is the time you should be seeking medical advice," she explained.
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, about 610,00 people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year.
