Mpox detected in NSW after three people diagnosed in South Australia - 9News

Three people have been diagnosed with mpox in New South Wales, with health officials in South Australia also reporting three cases of the virus today.

NSW health officials said all three cases were diagnosed this week and were related to current mpox outbreaks interstate.

The viral infection - formerly known as monkeypox - usually results in a mild illness that lasts a few weeks, however some people will develop severe illness and require hospitalisation.

Queensland has detected a fifth case of the monkeypox virus.

Since May 2022, there has been a global outbreak of mpox with more than 97,000 cases reported around the world.

The virus is spread through close personal contact, including sexual contact, and mainly affects men who have sex with men.

In total, 72 cases of mpox have been identified in NSW since 2022.

SA health officials also announced today that three people had been diagnosed with mpox in South Australia.

SA Health became aware of a man in his 20s, a man in his 30s and a man in his 50s who had acquired the virus locally.

Dr Louise Flood, deputy director of the Communicable Disease Control Branch, said "the risk to the public is low" but encouraged anyone eligible to be vaccinated to do so now.

"Mpox is not easily transmitted from person to person without prolonged close or intimate contact," she said.

"If you do think you have mpox, seek medical advice and get tested."

Vaccination reduces the risk of transmission and severity of the disease and is free for close contacts of mpox cases and all sexually active gay or bisexual men and other men who have sex with men.

Health officials stressed that two doses of the vaccine are required.

"Anyone who has only received one dose should get a second dose at least 28 days after the first," NSW Health executive director of health protection Dr Jeremy McAnulty said.

The three people diagnosed with mpox in South Australia are the first recorded cases in South Australia since 2022.

There have been 67 cases across Australia this year, 45 of which were reported in Victoria.

A list of clinics offering the vaccination in NSW can be found on the NSW Health website.
