Measles alert issued for multiple locations in south-west Sydney - 9News

A measles alert has been issued for south-west Sydney after health officials were told a child had visited several locations while infectious.

NSW Health said the child had recently from the Middle East where there were recent outbreaks, but they weren't considered infectious on their flight to Sydney.

Officials warned that anyone who had attended a range of locations in Bankstown, Greenacre and Yagoona should watch for the development of any symptoms

Anyone who attended the following locations was told to monitor for symptoms:

  • Bankstown TAFE playgroup on Tuesday, May 14 between 10 am and 12.15 pm.
  • Your Discount Chemist on Boronia Road, Greenacre, on Saturday, May 18 between 1.45 pm and 2.30 pm.

NSW health officials will attempt to contact anyone who attended Greenacre Medical Centre on May 18 between 12 pm and 2.30 pm, and Yagoona Family Healthcare between 12.30 pm and 2 pm.

"Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body," South Western Sydney Local Health District Director of Public Health, Dr Mitchell Smith said.

"It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until Friday 7 June."

Health officials urged the community to check that they have had the measles vaccine.

"This should be a reminder for everyone to check that they are protected against measles, which is highly infectious," he said.
