Passengers on flight QF42 from Jakarta to Sydney departed at 7pm on Tuesday and arrived in Sydney at 6.20am on Wednesday, while passengers on flight QF1433 from Sydney to ACT departed at 10am on Wednesday.

Those who may have been exposed to the case also include those in the international arrivals terminal including baggage claim and customs on Wednesday morning from 6am to 8am.

Passengers on the Qantas transfers bus between International and Domestic terminals on Wednesday morning are also advised to stay alert.

Anyone who spent time in Sydney International and Domestic Airports on Wednesday is also urged to observe themselves for any symptoms, as well as those in the domestic departures terminal before 10am on Wednesday.

Those present at the domestic arrivals terminal of Canberra Airport, including the baggage claim area, between 11am and 11.30am on Wednesday are also urged to observe for symptoms.

The ACT resident developed their infection while travelling in Asia.

NSW Health Acting Director for Communicable Diseases Dr Katherine Todd said that while these locations do not pose an ongoing risk, people who are susceptible to the measles and who were at those locations at the specified times should be on alert for any symptoms until Sunday, March 5.

“Those most likely to be susceptible to measles are infants under 12 months of age who are too young to be vaccinated, and anyone who is not fully vaccinated against the disease, which may include some adults,” Todd said.

Anyone who was present on the mentioned flights and who is pregnant, immunocompromised, under the age of 12 months and has not previously received a measles vaccine is asked to urgently contact their local public health unit on 1300 066 055 to seek advice.

Measles symptoms can include fever, sore eyes, a cough, runny nose, sore throat and a red, blotchy skin rash spreading from the head and neck to the rest of the body. Measles can be fatal to small children.

“If you develop symptoms, please call ahead to your GP to ensure you do not wait in the waiting room with other patients,” Todd said.

“The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is safe and effective protection against measles. It’s free for anyone born during or after 1966 who hasn’t already had two doses. If you’re unsure whether you’ve had two doses, it’s safe to have another.”

Measles is considered to be a highly contagious disease and is commonly spread in the air through coughing and sneezing by someone who is sick with the illness.
