Patients could be able to eliminate glasses by using a new artificial lens following cataract surgery. - - Medical Progress

Cataract surgery is among the most successful medical procedures performed in the United States, with nearly 4 million Americans choosing to have their cataracts removed each year. Although the procedure has a success rate of 97 percent, it’s not uncommon for people to require glasses even after surgery, especially reading glasses. A new study was published at AAO 2021. It is the annual meeting of the 125 th annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The results revealed that patients who received an artificial lens were able to see clearly enough to no longer need glasses.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural clear lens. In cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist surgically removes the lens that is cloudy and replaces it with a synthetic lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Monofocal IOLs are the most well-known kind of IOL. They permit people to see clearly from a distance, but don’t treat presbyopia, which is an annoying part of aging that gradually takes away their near vision.

Researchers have been working for many years to develop a presbyopia-correcting IOL that corrects the full range of vision: up close at arms length, up close, and far away. While these IOLs for correcting presbyopia can correct near and intermediate vision, they can’t effectively correct the full range of vision. This new IOL attempts to change that by combining two presbyopia-correcting IOL technologies, multifocal and extended depth-of-focus, to achieve full vision correction. It’s called the Tecnis Synergy by Johnson & Johnson Vision. In May 2021, the Tecnis Synergy IOL was approved by the U.S. FDA.

In the study that was presented today, researchers from Bakersfield, Calif. and 14 other locations across the U.S. compared visual outcomes in patients who received a monofocal IOL or the new presbyopia correcting IOL during cataract surgery. Of the 272 patients who participated in the study, 88 percent of those who received the Tecnis Synergy presbyopia correcting IOL never used glasses compared with only 3 percent of those in the monofocal IOL group.

My goal in life was to defeat presbyopia before it takes over me. This lens is an essential element in our ability to treat presbyopia. The Tecnis Synergy is the most superior near vision of any lens I have ever used. For patients not wanting glasses This is the lens I recommend.”
