Victoria COVID cases surge on Thursday after easing out of lockdown plan revealed by Daniel Andrews - 7NEWS.com.au

Victoria’s COVID-19 cases have spiked to the highest in a year, recording more than 150 infections a day after the plan to slowly ease restriction was revealed.

On Thursday, the health department confirmed there had been 176 cases in the 24 hours to midnight.

Of those, 83 were linked to known outbreaks, meaning it was another high day for mystery cases at 93.

33,720 vaccine doses were administered on Wednesday.

The plan to ease out of lockdown

On Wednesday, the premier confirmed current lockdown measures will remain in place in Victoria until at least 70 per cent of the eligible population have received their first dose of vaccine.

That is expected to happen close to September 23.

On that day, Melbourne will hit a grim milestone and have the title as the the world’s most locked down city.

Once the state reaches the first vaccination benchmark, a minor easing of restrictions will happen including an increase in the exercise limit and travel radius.

Outdoor communal gym equipment and skateparks will also open and private inspections of unoccupied premises for a new purchase or end of lease will be permitted.

Daniel Andrews said between now and then, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton would be monitoring data around the cases to see if anything else can be changed.

While the September 23 restrictions will be implemented statewide if the target is reached, regional Victoria might be able to exit lockdown next week depending on epidemiological data.

There will still be strict restrictions in place and Shepparton will have different rules as they try to contain their own COVID-19 outbreak.
