New COVID-19 cases in Melbourne’s north after positive wastewater results in Epping - 7NEWS.com.au

There are two “likely” cases of COVID-19 in Melbourne’s north days after traces of the virus were detected in wastewater.

Victoria had gone 86 days straight of no locally acquired coronavirus cases, but that could change if retesting returns positive results.

On Monday, the health department confirmed it had been notified of “two likely positive cases” of the virus in the northern suburbs.

“It’s currently understood the two individuals are connected,” the health department tweeted.

“A full investigation is underway into these results and initial public health actions are being put in place while both individuals isolate and are urgently retested.

“We will communicate any specific public health actions the community needs to undertake as soon as possible when investigations and case interviews are complete.”

New South Wales Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said she had been in contact with her Victorian counterparts.

She described the situation as being in its “preliminary” stages.

“I think it provides a warning to the community,” she said.

“You can see how COVID can be transmitted in the community because it can be a mild disease and, therefore, go undetected.”

This comes after Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton issued an alert last Friday to notify Epping residents in the city’s north of an emerging “situation” they should be “aware of”.

The Department of Health had picked up traces of COVID-19 in the wastewater around the Epping and Wollert area.

It then named the Woolworths store in Epping as an exposure site, later correcting the alert to clarify the exposure site as being Woolworths Epping North, 3km away.

Anybody who attended the Woolworths store at the corner Epping Rd and Lyndarum Drive, on May 8 between 5.40pm and 6.38pm was warned to immediately get tested and isolate until a negative result is received.

A Melbourne man also tested positive to the virus on May 11 after returning from India on April 19 and contracting it during 14-days of hotel quarantine at Adelaide’s Playford Hotel.

On Monday, the Victorian government launched a crackdown on commuters shunning the mask mandate on trains and trams with a $200 fine for those who flout the rule.

“Sadly, mass compliance is hovering around 52 to 55 per cent on our train and tram network, and that’s not good enough,” Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll said.
