HIV false positives a 'setback' for 'innovative' Qld vaccine trial - Sky News Australia

Despite false positive HIV results in trials for the vaccine being developed by the University of Queensland, Co-Director of the Westmead Institute Centre of Virus Research Sarah Palmer says she is sure the drug “will be used in the future”. The University of Queensland’s (UQ) coronavirus vaccine trial was cancelled after several false positive results for HIV were reported during trials. However, Professor Palmer described the suspension of trials as a “setback” and said scientists would just need to find a way to overcome the “reactive” nature of the human body. She said the vaccine being developed by the University of Queensland “used a very innovative technology” concerning molecular clamp science. In the case of the coronavirus vaccine being developed by UQ, the molecular clamp was made from an HIV protein Professor Palmer said. “Unfortunately, because this molecular clamp was made from an HIV protein, not only did the body respond by developing antibodies to the coronavirus spike protein, which is very positive, but it also developed antibodies to the HIV protein". “This caused people to have positive HIV tests even though they were not infected with HIV.”
