Aussie vaccine to continue despite false-positive HIV result - 9News

Scientists working on the terminated University of Queensland COVID-19 vaccine trial say the decision to abandon the program "had nothing to do with safety".

Queensland's UQ vaccine program director Professor Trent Munro said phase one of the trial would continue despite the announcement to pull the plug on a large-scale trial.

"I think the most important thing about this one is that it had nothing to do with safety. So it wasn't a safety issue," he told Today.

"One of the elements used within the vaccine, which is really important one, was the little piece that we used to stabilise it and make sure we got the right type of immune response, it was derived from HIV."

"While we knew it was a small risk that we could see some level of immune reactivity against it, we didn't think it would get to the level it would interfere with tests, but that's what we discovered in doing the trial."

Professor Munro said the phase one of the trial would be continued and patients involved will be monitored until mid-next year.

What won't continue is the large scale trials that would measure the efficacy of the particular vaccine, ruling it out as a possible cure to be rolled out nation-wide.

Professor Munro said it was a "difficult day" for those working on the trial.

"It is hard where things were all going in the right direction ... People had sacrificed a lot this year," he said.

"But that's the reason we do these studies and we have such rigorous clinical assessment of vaccines before they get approved."

The Morrison government had agreed to purchase more than 50 million doses of the vaccine before the deal was abandoned.

Despite the set-back, Professor Munro said he was "very confident" the Australian government has an effective vaccine strategy.

"I think one of the things we could be very proud of is that the Australian government has been so proactive in its vaccine strategy, looking at multiple options, you know, ours included and many others.

"We have a number of agreements and those should be sufficient to cover the population a few times over."
