SA COVID-19 lockdown in its final day - Deniliquin Pastoral Times

South Australians have just one more day of a statewide coronavirus lockdown to endure after authorities moved to east restrictions three days early.

The lockdown will now end at midnight on Saturday, although a range of measures will remain in place to limit crowds at various venues, including pubs and restaurants.

The emergency sparked by a worrying COVID-19 cluster has eased somewhat after officials revealed some information related to the spread of the virus was false.

Locals are already free to exercise and from Sunday most shops will be allowed to trade again.

Some venues will be limited to the number of patrons they can serve while a rule of one person to every four square metres will apply across the board.

Schools will also reopen on Monday.

Police have established a task force to examine all the circumstances surrounding the misinformation which raised fears over more widespread community transmission.

Nevertheless, the Parafield cluster continued to grow on Friday, with three new cases taking it to 25 confirmed infections.

Another 44 people are suspected of having the virus but are waiting for test results.

All the new and suspected cases are already in quarantine, with the total number of people in isolation rising to more than 4500.

Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said the number of confirmed infections was expected to rise during the next few days but urged people not to be alarmed by that.

She said efforts were continuing to put a "double ring-fence" around the outbreak to limit the risk of more widespread transmission.

SA conducted a record 14,459 tests on Thursday, taking the total during the past three days to almost 36,000.

Despite the early end to the lockdown, Business SA said it would still hit the state economy hard.

"To say this week has been a roller-coaster ride for South Australian business owners would be a gross understatement," chief executive Martin Haese said.

"A three-day shutdown of the entire state will cost businesses many millions of dollars."
