Victoria records 11 new coronavirus cases, two more deaths - NEWS.com.au

Victoria has recorded 11 new coronavirus cases and two deaths on Monday, the Department of Health confirmed.

It would be the state’s lowest daily tally since June 12.

The city’s 14-day average continues its downward trend, dipping to 34.4.

It means the city could be on track to an easing of restrictions before the scheduled date in late October.

Metropolitan Melbourne must reach an average daily case rate of between 30 and 50 cases over the preceding fortnight to trigger an easing of lockdown measures from September 28.

The 14-day rolling average for regional Victoria is at 1.6.

There are 47 cases of an unknown source in metropolitan Melbourne and none in regional Victoria.

Melbourne is not expected to be freed from harsh lockdown measures until October 26, according to the state government’s strict COVID-19 recovery road map.

But Daniel Andrews hinted at the possibility of relaxing that date at Sunday’s press conference.

“We will always be guided by those three things: the evidence and the science, the data and what is deemed safe,” the Premier said.

“We are on schedule. We may even be a bit ahead of schedule, but we’ve got to keep going.”

An earlier-than-expected easing of restrictions could mean public gatherings of up to 10 people would be allowed, shops would be able to reopen, restaurants could offer outdoor dining and the curfew would come to an end.

Premier Daniel Andrews will front the media later on Monday.
