Coronavirus declared a pandemic

"Thinking through the intervals of a pandemic, we believe that we are still in the acceleration phase, in the early stages," said Dr. Tilson of NCDHHS.

In response, she said they are gearing up in containment strategies that are used at the beginning stages of an epidemic. They are also thinking through a community mitigation strategy to put in place as we move through the acceleration stage.

"Some of our major efforts are what we call non-pharmaceutical community mitigation strategies, which are meant to blunt the peak of the spread of the disease, to ensure we have the resources in order to respond," she said.

She describes the first tier as focusing on high risk people, such as people who are over 65 or who have an underlying medical condition or compromised immune system. "Many of our recommendations are around protecting those higher risk people," she said.

She said high risk people should avoid large crowds or mass travel. Likewise, she said event coordinators for large events should adopt flexible refund policies to help protect vulnerable populations. Events should also discourage anyone who is sick from attending.
