U.S. flu deaths hit 14,000, haven’t peaked yet, CDC says - MLive.com

More than 26 million Americans have gotten sick with the flu so far this season, leading to an estimated 14,000 deaths and 250,000 hospital stays, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A second wave of the illness is hitting the U.S this month, and the two strains of the flu making the rounds this year have been especially hard on children, according to the Associated Press. There have been 92 flu-related deaths reported in children - which is a higher total at this point in the flu season than any in the past decade. Two of those deaths were confirmed in Michigan last month. Hospitalization rates of children with the flu are also higher than past years so far.

The first surge of the flu season began in October, which was an early start. The second wave began ramping up in late January, the AP said.

“We have not yet peaked for influenza. We are still on our way up,” Dr. David Weber, a University of North Carolina infectious-diseases specialist, said of the patient traffic in Chapel Hill.

Michigan currently has a high level of influenza-like illnesses being reported, according to the CDC.
