Vaccination for Victorian students begin today as coronavirus cases steadily rise - 9News

Thirty-thousand senior students have already flooded the hotline trying to book a coronavirus vaccine.

VCE students now have access to their own Pfizer pool ahead of their exams in October, with staff who run the tests also eligible.

An extra 402 GPs will help administer the vaccines from next week after a delay by federal authorities who were prioritising Sydney hotspots.

But Victorian health officials are urging unvaccinated adults not to wait for their GPs to get supplies of Pfizer, instead they should roll up their sleeves for AstraZeneca.

The warning came as Victoria recorded 246 new coronavirus cases yesterday, the highest number since August last year.

Health Minister Martin Foley said most of those sick in hospitals have not had the vaccine, even though they are eligible.

Doctors said many people who have had blood clots or strokes in the past wrongly believe the AstraZeneca vaccine is unsafe for them.

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Karen Price told The Age: "people are getting the wrong idea that because they've got a chronic health condition that they shouldn't have AstraZeneca – but they're precisely the people who need to get vaccinated because COVID is such a risk to them."

Mr Foley said 87 per cent of yesterday's total cases were aged under 50.

"The age breakdown continues to point to this being a pandemic of the unvaccinated," he said.

Around 60.8 per cent of Victorians have received at least one dose of vaccine, short of the national average of 63.2 per cent.

There are now 1619 active COVID-19 cases across Victoria.
