New modelling reveals ‘overwhelming’ ICU prediction - The Advertiser

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has released new modelling on the expected number of Covid patients set to flood the state’s ICU at the peak of the outbreak.

Up to 560 Covid cases are expected to need intensive care treatment in hospital in mid October, with the demand set to have to an “overwhelming” impact on ICU operations.

Including non-Covid cases, the ICU demand is expected to peak at 947 patients, state government modelling predicts.

That will have an “overwhelming” impact on ICU operations, the modelling says.

At this level, “demand for critical care services significantly exceeds organisation-wide capacity”.

Patients will be moved around, treated outside usual ICU areas, and there will be a higher number of patients per staff member.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state has a “surge” capacity of 1550 staffed ICU beds.

Daily case numbers are predicted to peak at up to 2,000 per day in mid September.
