WA coronavirus patient has UK strain - The Islander

A coronavirus patient in Western Australia at the centre of personal protective equipment breaches has been confirmed to have the highly contagious UK strain.

The woman in her 80s arrived in the state from the UK on Tuesday and went into hotel quarantine and has since been taken to hospital.

A paramedic, a nurse and a third person who came into contact with the woman have been forced into hotel quarantine after it was revealed they breached protection protocols.

The WA health department on Thursday afternoon confirmed the woman had the UK strain.

WA Premier Mark McGowan has given assurances there is no risk to the public despite breaches he described as "flabbergasting".

He has pledged a full review of the situation.

"We've seen outbreaks occur around Australia and around the world through staff who work in quarantine hotels and those sorts of facilities," Mr McGowan said.

"We don't want to see that happen here."

When the woman first required medical assistance a nurse responded while not wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), in breach of protocols.

The second breach occurred when a St John Ambulance officer not wearing PPE was less than 1.5 metres from the woman as she was transferred into an ambulance.

A review of CCTV footage at Perth Airport found a third person had also gone to the aid of the woman when she first arrived.

That person has returned a negative test for the virus and remains in isolation.
